Zantac Warning: On April 1, 2020, the U.S. FDA announced that they are withdrawing all Zantac and all over-the-counter generic Zantac ranitidine drugs from the market immediately.  This is because they determined that the amount of NDMA (a cancer-causing substance) in these drugs can increase over time and result in much higher levels than consumers should be exposed to.

Symptoms of NDMA & Zantac

Zantac is a very common heartburn medication that is available to consumers in both prescription and over-the-counter medications.

This drug has been found to have been contaminated by the carcinogen NDMA (nitrosodimethylamine).  When ranitidine (Zantac) comes in contact with water, it creates a chemical reaction that causes NDMA to form.  However, while this knowledge was known, the companies making the drugs did not stop producing and did not disclose this risk to consumers.

Exposure to NDMA can have severe side effects that include bladder cancer, stomach cancer, damage and reduced function of liver, kidneys, and lungs.  Other symptoms related to NDMA exposure can include headaches, nausea or vomiting, fever, jaundice, or dizziness.

Other adverse effects that are associated with the drug Zantac include:

  • Irregular or rapid heartbeat
  • Liver failure
  • Hepatitis
  • Increased risk of pneumonia
  • Low blood platelet levels
  • Skin rashes and hair loss
  • Nervous system disorders

NDMA is an extremely hazardous substance that is required by law to report if using, producing, or storing this substance. The FDA has an ongoing investigation to examine this substance in ranitidine drugs and to evaluate the risk level of patients.  Currently Zantac is removed from the market but not completely recalled.

Zantac Lawsuit

Zantac has been on the market since the 1980s as a popular antacid medication.  Since then, there have been a number of studies that have showed a link between NDMA in Zantac and cancer.  The big pharmaceutical companies that make Zantac failed to warn consumers of this link.  These companies, such as Sanofi and Boerhinger Ingelheim, were manufacturing drugs while knowing that there was a clear link to a cancer-causing substance.

In September of 2019, the FDA announced that it was investigating these cancer risks after testing Zantac drugs and finding certain levels of NDMA contaminant.  The FDA has now announced that all Zantac brand heartburn drugs should be immediately removed from the market due to the possibility of NDMA contamination of the drugs.

After years of this drug being sold and consumed, there are now a countless number of people developing adverse health effects including cancer after having taken Zantac.  Many of these consumers are now filing lawsuits against these major pharmaceutical companies that have been marketing and selling their drugs without warning of these effects.

Seek Compensation after taking Zantac

If you or a loved one has taken Zantac for more than 6 months and been diagnosed with cancer, compensation for damages may be in order.  These damages can include but are not limited to:

  • Medical expenses resulting from your injuries
  • Pain and suffering caused by injuries
  • Lost wages
  • Quality of life
  • Punitive damages

In order to be eligible to participate in this litigation and receive compensation for your damages, you must have been taking the drug Zantac or a generic version of this medication for over 6 months and you must have received a diagnosis of cancer from your doctor.  If you have met this criteria and think you may be eligible to file a claim, it is important that you talk with an experienced attorney about your potential Zantac lawsuit right away.
